About Us

Able to learn helps students improve their literacy and gain study skills that genuinely empower them to be a "life-long-learner." After retiring from engineering, Kat has used these same skills and more to train dozens of tutors and personally tutor hundreds of students of all ages, including English Language Learners. Her passion is to raise people to a basic literacy and then share study skills so they can learn anything they choose, retain the knowledge and apply it to improve their own quality of life. People who are literate and confident become leaders in creating their own life and helping others.

Kat Calhoun is the owner and Director of Able to Learn (established 2007). Ms. Calhoun received her BS in Mathematics from the University of Oklahoma in 1973, with a Secondary Teaching Credential for Math. The very study skills she teaches and her tutors utilize are what allowed her to transition from Math Teacher to Engineer. After decades of work as an Engineer, she retired and now pursues her passion in education.

Diana Grippen makes her home is in Hamden, CT. As a teacher or tutor, Diana has worked with students at various levels, from pre-school to college. She earned her PhD in Hispanic Studies at Brown University, , double Masters in Spanish & French at Pennsylvania State University, teacher certification and Administration and Supervision Program at Southern Connecticut State University. She made Who's Who in the East in 1984. She has taught in private and public schools in Connecticut for sixteen years, ran a family home daycare and currently tutors. Dr. Grippen brings her love of learning and joy of life to literacy projects at Able to Learn.
